California State Fire Marshal Code Interpretation of 2007 CBC Sec. 705.1.2 & 903.2.2 (Fire Sprinkler System)

Nice catch Stu. Looks like it's something the SFM added to the model code, then it got taken out or moved with the Jan 1 Supplement.

I wish the SFM would stop changing it, we're already back to a state code that barely resembles the model IBC and that will just make matters worse and worse when they try to update during the next major CA code rollout [every three years, right?].

Mike
You have several opportunities through the state code adoption process to tell the SFM, as well as the Building Standards Commission that you don't want a particular section, or sections changed from Model code. I'd encourage anyone to participate in that process, as you come away with a better understanding not only of why a code was modified, but also of the concerns of all stakeholders.
Robert,
I was personally involved with the adoption process here in the LA area with the SFM before we adopted the 2006 IBC. I met with the group in the LA-DSA offices several times and corresponded with the SFM offices directly as well. At each meeting I was the only practicing architect present.

While that is fine, finding the "perfect start off wording" to push ammendments through the CBSC process to me doesn't really justify doing so: California now has a lot of voting blocks in the ICC and truly THAT is where the code changes should occur, not at the state level, which unfortunately sets us back to where we were with the 2001 CBC.

Just think how this will all go when we move to the 2009 IBC or 2011 IBC. More tremendous and well-meaning effort required for CBSC and every agency for their own little [or big!] areas of concern...

Sorry to hijack the thread.
Mike
