I have a client who would like to use a basement for wine storage. It has two exits so exiting is good BUT the bottom of the support beams are at 6'-4". It is in an unregistered historic building and I was hoping to find an exemption for ceiling hgts in that Code but no luck. Nor was I able to find anything in the Existing Bldg Code. Anyone know if this is even possible? Thanks
Ceiling hgt in old basement

Been there a couple of times:
If the wine storage is truly just storage and not a lot of square feet, then you most likely can get the AHJ to agree to the alteration.
If the project looks like habitable space, the AHJ most likely will not agree to the low ceiling and you now have a large design problem.
