Existing corridor versus new

In an existing building (B occupancy) designed under the 1994 UBC a corridor was required to be rated if over 30 occupants. A renovation is now taking place in the same building under the 2006 IBC. The designer is putting unprotected openings in this same wall with the explanation that the IBC allows sprinklered corridors to be unrated. My thought is that he needs to maintain the existing fire safety systems - or does he? Thanks!!
