I have a large office building that is equipped with a manual fire alarm system. If a tenant moves in that requires an automatic and manual fire alarm system (E occupancy for example), must the entire building alarm system be upgraded to include the automatic fire alarm system requirements? Or do the automatic system requirements apply only to the specific occupancy area?
[F] 907.2.1 Group A....Portions of Group E.....Exception: Manual fire alarm boxes are not required where the building is equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system....
The code clearly states Portions of, not the entire building
And
If.... automatic sprinkler system.... Manual alarm not required
You are correct. However, I am curious to know if the remainder of the building must be updated to include the automatic fire alarm items (smoke/heat detectors) rather than the manual fire alarm items (pull stations)...or if this only applies to the specific tenant space.
I re-read the code section, again, and my brain decided to function correctly this time HAHAHA The automatic fire alarm requirements only apply to E occupancies which would apply only to that portion of the building.
