Need Help with the BCDG site?

My two cents - expressed before, but no response was offered.

Cent one:  Change the daily post format to one that is more easily read/understood - graphically.  The current layout is dismal compared to the original format.  The 'cuts' between topics and comments is poor, the typeface not the best, the contrasts, etc. are certainly not state of the art. I am all for change, but only when they are improvements.

Cent two:  When 'comments' are posted, the actual comment should be posted in the email sent to readers.  There is no logical reason that I should receive an email telling me that I have to click through to see a comment made by another poster.  Previously the actual comment appeared in the email.  Why was that changed?  The 'click-through' and sign-on task is definitely an inconvenience - a waste of time, the one thing that is most precious.

Response:  Thank you for your post and I will do what I can to improve the site to make it more user friendly.

We did not have a choice to keep the old platform as the parent company decided to no longer support the 'Eve' platform.  They were able to transfer our existing information to the new platform  (hoop.la) and that may not have been possible if we switched to a different company.

I do have the ability to change fonts and to change themes and colors.  My questions for you are:

1. What font(s) do you think should be used for this site (type, size)?

2. What background color(s) would be best, or no background?

3. What type of break(s) would be best between posts?

I will contact the help desk for settings on email notifications to see if we can avoid the click through and sign in.  As part of the migration process, the original BCDG site is not available to compare fonts/colors/etc., so I might need to try different suggestions and get your input to have the appearance be as close to the original as possible.

Thanks for your input,

Richard

It's not a matter of the specifics... its the overall graphic format, which is not viewer friendly.  Perhaps someone with web site expertise can chime in, point to an available off-the-shelf format that has a more readable format, etc.  The current format is simply very difficult to 'read' from a graphics standpoint... and can only be more difficult for those who are older and/or have specific visual acuity deficits (which is very possible since the board has evolved with a focus on disability issues).  Stronger contrast, clearly defined separations between posted topics, more variation between headers and body text, etc.  These are foundational web site design considerations, where the attention is intended to be on actual reading and comprehension of text/information as opposed to skimming of images, ads, and such.

As to click-through, I think it's pretty self-explanatory.  I belong to numerous discussion groups and get emails with 'posts' all the time... all of them include the actual content, and do not require a click-through.  Among all of them (maybe 50 or so) BCDG is the only one that makes me click through. I just don't understand why... I see no rationale for this.  It should be a simple fix.

Another item that I did not think of... and I don't know why... it seems that I am asked repeatedly to sign into the site, even though I have not shut down my computer and I have the site sign-in page set to 'remember me' automatically.  Something is amiss.

Thanks for any improvements you can make.
