Planter box

Richard,

I didn't find it in the IRC either. I did find something similar in a 1988 UBC I have leftover from my California days. Section 2516(c)#7. "Where planter boxes are installed adjacent to wood frame walls a 2-inch wide air space shall be provided between the planter and the wall."

I know that's no help but, I found it interesting.
Rich, you may want to review the 2006 Commentary, 2304.11 Protection against Decay and Termites. With much residential being slab on grade the 2" gap would tend to trap water.
ICC now seems to tend towards use of treated lumber and use of membranes to seperate and protect the wood.
