stadium steel protection

I see stadiums (stadia?) around the country without fireproofing on their exterior steel columns and girders. In the codes I see an exemption for fireproofing on the high roof members, but otherwise stadiums would typically have to be Type 1-A or 1-B construction, which would require 2 or 3-hour protection.

What gives? Am I missing an exception someplace? The steel members on a stadiium are typically very heavy - is that part of the secret?
